From now on, NVIDIA will focus more on in-house chips

NVIDIA It is always news, both for the good and the bad and of course for the “normal”, as is this case. From what it seems, from now on NVIDIA is going to focus a lot of efforts on the development of own custom chipssince they have opened a new R&D center in Taiwan and they are hiring a good number of local engineers for it.

As soon as NVIDIA makes any type of announcement or even movement, all alarms go off. It is one of the most valuable companies in the world, especially thanks to the rise of Artificial Intelligence, and that means that it is in the spotlight not only of users and the press, but also of rival companies. So the fact that it has opened a new research and development center in the nerve center of Taiwan and that it is hiring dozens of engineers… well, that has raised alarm bells and, above all, assumptions about “why” it is has done. Normal, right?

What is NVIDIA’s new R&D center for?

Well, what many media outlets are taking for granted is that the new R&D center and the new engineers that those in green are hiring are to focus on the manufacturing of ASICs or custom chips, and more specifically with the aim of having their own computing arsenal based on AI but tailored to your needs. Currently NVIDIA already develops open architecture Artificial Intelligence products, such as the Blackwell and Hopper lines, but when it comes to creating personalized products for its clients, nothing at all. And that is precisely why these rumors are born.

This research and development center could focus precisely on covering an aspect in which NVIDIA is quite weak right now: customized chips for customers. Something like the APUs that AMD develops for Sony consoles, but when it comes to NVIDIA you can already assume that in these times it would focus more on Artificial Intelligence things, although this is more of our assumption, of course, because it really doesn’t They have said nothing and it could be anything.

What is true is that there are reports that claim that NVIDIA plans to establish chip production lines at some point in the future to stop depending on TSMC and others, but at the moment they seem more focused on attracting talent and training their employees. engineers, something that is not at all unreasonable in a company of this value and size (especially if it manages to “attract” engineers from rival companies).

NVIDIA HQ final

For some time now, rumors have been circulating that NVIDIA is developing customized AI chips in collaboration with MediaTek for the PC segment, so the Artificial Intelligence segment would not (fortunately) be the only one that would benefit from this investment for part of the green team. In addition, the firm already has the Tegra SoC used by Nintendo, so they have some experience in this area.

Custom AI chips could be the computing industry’s next big thing, ultimately allowing NVIDIA to prevent companies from developing their own chips to rely on it.
