Green technology: energy-efficient hardware components for your PC

Within the computing sector, there are a large number of hardware components that we can use to build a PC, whether to have exceptional performance or to do the most basic tasks, we can always find the perfect configuration. This also happens if we look for the lowest possible consumption, although we must be clear about one thing, and that is that the models that have components of low consumption They do not usually arrive with the traditional tower computer format that we can find, another additional detail being the fact that they are obviously designed to have a much lower performance.

The PC models that consume the least are those designed to optimize this feature as much as possible; laptop computers, for example, usually incorporate (in variants that are not oriented for games or high-performance applications) a series of components that offer the consumption energetic really low since they depend on a battery, something similar to what happens in smartphones. But on a desktop PC this can be a little more complicated to achieve, so these are the solutions you can find for it.

The best consumption is in mini PCs

When we talk about the consumption that a PC can have, what we must take into account is that in the end everything depends on the use that we are going to give it, in the event that we want a series of low consumption components since we are not going to use it either. using the computer too much, the solution is really simple. Mini PCs usually offer the lowest consumption that we can find on the market if we do not count smartphones and similar devices as a system of this type, since they would be the ones that take the prize for greatest energy efficiency if we talk about computer systems in general.

But for desktop computers, those that have this format tend to be the ones with the lowest energy consumption because they are generally created to offer much lower power, that is, since the components do not directly require higher performance, they do not need higher consumption. so high In these models, for example, we can find that the processors offer a maximum consumption of less than 15 W (such as Intel’s N series processors), while the rest of the components of the board, such as the storage devices, do not exceed the 6 W.

In general, this type of computer never usually exceeds 100 W, as long as we are referring to the versions that seek to offer the lowest possible consumption.

Is it possible to achieve this on a desktop computer?

As we have explained before, if we want a computer that has the lowest possible consumption we would have to choose to use a mini PC aimed at this objective, but if we are looking for a desktop PC that also has these characteristics, we would have to make a series of adjustments to it. the configuration. If the only thing we are looking for is that it does not consume too much but has relatively high performance, we could choose to create a configuration with a processor that has the lowest consumption on the market but still has decent performance.

In this aspect we could opt for an i5-14400T, since it is a model that is configured to offer 35 W as a base. On the other hand, if we want to incorporate an M.2 SSD we could opt for one that does not work at too high a speed, such as models that remain between 4000-5000 MB/s. For its part, we should adjust the RAM to what the processor offers, in this case the model we have mentioned supports both DDR4-3200 and DDR5-4800, and we should opt for the second since it consumes less than the DDR4 version.

Obviously it is clear that we would have to leave out one of the components that consumes the most, the graphics card, since it would not make sense to build a computer that works with less than 500 W and then incorporate a part that can actually consume more. 300 W depending on the model.
