How many graphics cards can be connected to a home PC?

When we are looking for a new gaming PC already assembled, we see how all, absolutely all the models that we can buy only include a dedicated graphics card. You will not find any model that includes two graphics cards, however that does not mean that you cannot connect more than one to the motherboard, as long as it has PCIe slots to do so or using external graphics cards through a USB4 or OCuLink port.

If we connect several graphics cards to a PC, Windows will have no problem recognizing them on the computer, just as it already does by showing both the integrated graphics card on the board and the dedicated external graphics card. Another very different thing is that they can be used together to improve the performance, for example, of video games.

It is important to note that we are talking about domestic use, with boards and graphics that any user has at their fingertips, not the hardware that we can find in data servers where several GPUs can be connected to work together, AI racks being the most common example.

If we have several graphics cards connected to a motherboard, when running the game or application that is going to be used, only the graphics card where the monitor where the image is displayed will work. The rest of the graphics cards will remain lookingso if you want to improve the graphic performance of your PC in video games with a higher number of FPS and resolution, what you should do is change for a more powerful graphics card.

If the top-of-the-range graphics cards from both NVIDIA and AMD had very different performance in performing certain tasks, it might make sense to install them on a PC and use them interchangeably, however, both share practically the same features. Since they cannot work together, even though both are from the same manufacturer, there is no motivation to do so.

In the past you could

A few years ago, having two graphs and using them together was possible and common thanks to technology SLI from NVIDIA and CrossFire from AMD. This technology allowed for increased graphic performance. However, the performance gained in return wasn’t really worth the investment of purchasing two graphics cards, so both NVIDIA and AMD stopped implementing them. Furthermore, the developers were not about to implement this technology in their video games.

The performance of the graphics cards that we can currently find on the market is more than enough to run any type of game, although not all of them allow you to enjoy the same graphic quality since it depends on their performance.

Game developers take into account the features offered by graphics and adapt the titles they release to them since, if this were not the case, it would not be possible to play. This same case not only applies to PC games, but also to games developed for consoles. If a game has such high requirements that it is not capable of working with the hardware currently on the market, it will not have a commercial release.
