Google announced the update of Wear OS 5 at Google I/O 2024 and it didn’t take long for Samsung to launch the update to its new line of Samsung watches: the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra. These two great smartwatches are now joined by all of these:
Galaxy Watch
It is not surprising that the Galaxy Watch 7 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra come with Wear OS 5, since Google’s operating system was released with these watches, being the main software of the Korean firm’s smartwatches since they changed the operating system Tizen in 2021.
It is true that Samsung superimposes a customized version of it under the name One UI, but the reality is that, underneath it, as happens with mobile phones, is the Google operating system. And these will be the next smartphones to enjoy this operating system or that are already doing so:
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic
- Samsung Galaxy Watch FE
Samsung released beta versions of One UI 6 and Wear OS 5 for some of these watches months ago, but some are still waiting for the update. Don’t worry, it will eventually arrive.
Google Pixel
He Google Pixel Watch 3 It is the first Pixel Watch to run Wear OS 5, but it won’t be the only one.
In fact, the brand has announced that the rest of the watches in its catalog will also be updated in the coming months:
- Google Pixel Watch
- Google Pixel Watch 2
OnePlus
OnePlus devices generally lag behind Samsung and Google in terms of number of updates, but despite this, the OnePlus watches are now ready to receive Wear OS 5. In fact, the brand has already said that the OnePlus Watch 2 will receive two major Wear OS updates and three years of security updates and, since the watch launched with Wear OS 4 in February 2024, it should receive up to Wear OS 6 and receive security patches until early 2027. However, OnePlus has not detailed when these updates will be available after their release.
Oppo
The Oppo Watch Wear OS 4 in March 2024 and is an ideal candidate for Wear OS 5 since it is fairly new. We should see how the smartwatch is updated throughout these weeks, without having to reach 2025.
And the rest of the watches?
Well, there are brands of smartwatches that also work with Wear OSas is the case of the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro. However, they are currently “stuck” on version 3.5 and have not yet received the timely Wear OS 4 revision.
It will end up coming, yes, but we cannot put our hand in the fire about when it will do so. Nor in the Xiaomi watches nor those of other brands that work with the Google operating system.
