Intel and AMD join forces to fight ARM

At HardZone we have been saying for some time that both Intel as amd They must get their act together if they do not want to see how their market share, especially in the laptop segment with this architecture, makes more sense due to its low consumptionis affected by new manufacturers that are betting on the ARM architecture.

Evolution of the x86 architecture

However, it seems that the plans of both Intel and AMD do not involve adapting this architecture in their processors, at least in the range for laptops, but rather that they want it to continue evolving at a good pace. To do this, they have created an x86 ecosystem advisory group designed to ensure that the x86 architecture keep evolving.

The x86 architecture was created by Intel more than 40 years ago and AMD pays a license to use it in its processors. This has been used in both desktop and laptop computers as well as in servers. While, in desktop PCs, energy consumption is not a priority, it is in laptops and, in recent years, also in data centers.

Here x86 suffers a lot to offer a consumption similar to that offered by the ARM architecture, although Intel and AMD are doing everything possible to reduce it. The new generation of Intel Core Ultra processors, like the Ryzen Series 9000, have focused on improving performance and reducing consumption, however, they are still far from what the ARM architecture is capable of offering.

The expected fruits of the collaboration between Intel and AMD are:

  • Improve customers’ choice and compatibility in hardware and software, while accelerating their ability to benefit from new cutting-edge features.
  • Simplify architectural guidelines to improve consistency of software and interfaces across Intel and AMD x86 product offerings.
  • Enable greater and more efficient integration of new capabilities into operating systems, frameworks and applications.

Broadcom, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Oracle, Red Hat and even Microsoft, who is betting very heavily on Qualcomm processors with ARM architecture, are part of this alliance where Linus Torvalds (Linux creator) and Tim Sweeney (CEO of Epic Games).

Intel and AMD - Ecosystem Advisory

From this association the only thing we can expect is something that is truly capable of revolutionizing what until now we know as the x86 architecture, an architecture that will continue to be the only option in computers to perform heavy tasks such as running games, video editing or 3D rendering. , at least in the coming years, as long as it does not stagnate as it seems to give the impression in recent years, where the evolution of both Intel and AMD processors has been far below expectations.
