ViewSonic works on a 520 Hz monitor, do we really need that much?

According to the latest rumors, the well-known manufacturer ViewSonic is working on a new model OLED gaming monitor that would hit the market in 2025, a monitor with which they intend to establish a new standard in the industry by offering a refresh rate of 520Hz. At this time there are already some 480 Hz monitors, and in theory Samsung is working on increasing that figure to 500 Hz, but is this much refresh rate really used in a gaming monitor?

The new ViewSonic monitor would be one of those known as “dual mode”, which means that it is capable of operating at different resolutions with different refresh rates. In other words, we would be talking about a monitor capable of operating at 4K resolution with up to 240 Hz, but if you want 520 Hz you would have to reduce its resolution to Full HD… so as you can imagine, these high refresh rates have a bit of ” trick”.

A 520 Hz monitor for gaming, what’s the point?

As most of you probably already know, a higher refresh rate means that the screen is capable of reproducing a greater number of images per second, which produces a greater sensation of fluidity, something especially good when playing games. The effect is also eliminated ghosting so uncomfortable, and if the monitor has variable refresh rate (VRR) technology such as FreeSync or G-Sync, the tearingmaking the gaming experience truly excellent.

However, and to explain it easily and quickly, this is achieved by synchronizing the frames per second that the graphics card is capable of displaying with the refresh rate of the monitor. That is to say, to enjoy this excellent gaming experience, if your monitor runs at 240 Hz, for example, you need the graphics card to be capable of 240 FPS in the game… something that, in modern games, even the most powerful graphics cards on the market They have difficulties.

Now think about 520 Hz, or 520 FPS for the graphics card. What graphics are capable of that and under what conditions? An RTX 4090 at Full HD resolution may be capable of delivering 520 FPS in titles like Counter-Strike 2 if you lower the graphic settings a little (in those conditions, maybe even some lower graphics), but when we talk about 1440p resolutions and let alone 4K, reaching those values is practically impossible.

For these reasons, we personally wonder what the point is in launching monitors with such a high refresh rate on the market. We don’t see it, the truth is, precisely because of what we have already explained, and that is that with today’s games you can hardly reach those FPS values so that the monitor can synchronize with the graphics. Yes, there are times when yes, with graphics cards costing almost 2,000 euros and using the almost archaic Full HD resolution… all the more reason to ask ourselves what the point of this is, don’t you think?

The truth is, to us it seems more like a new “war of figures” in which in this case the monitor manufacturers fight to see who is capable of offering the highest figures, figures with which they will later justify that you have to spend thousands of euros on a monitor… to end up playing at Full HD resolution. Honestly, I don’t see the point.
